林天祐教授 沉默的巨人

  林教授於1913年12月18日生於台灣台北。1936年自台北醫學專門學校畢業後,即進入台北帝國大學附屬醫院(台大前身)外科,接受澤田平一郎教授之教誨。戰後繼續出任台大醫學院及附設醫院外科講師、副教授、教授及主任等職,迨1976年功成身退,共在台大外科服務40餘年,可說是領導外科時間最長而功勞最大的老師。

  林教授自1962年接任台大外科主任後,積極發展外科各次專科、一般外科、胸腔外科、骨科及心臟外科。他先後為台灣開創第一次新手術,例如在1956年首次施行心臟手術成功,1964年完成第一次開心手術,也是台大醫院第一位開胸行肺部切除手術者,第一位行食道切除者,第一位胃癌擴大根除手術者。在肝癌的手術更創造了手指切肝法,成為舉世聞名的肝癌權威。

  台大外科以肝臟手術聞名世界,這是林教授畢生努力創造出來的。自1954年完成首例肝左葉切除手術,更於1959年完成亞洲第一個肝臟右全葉切除,從此他的“手指切肝法”遂聞名世界,享譽肝臟外科。其肝臟外科研究及其創造性手指切肝法,深受各國外科醫學會人士的推薦與仿效。除這次,更應邀在國際5本有關消化外科的教科書中推薦肝癌的章節,T.Y.LIN也因此成為舉世聞名的肝癌權威,可說20世紀台灣在國際外科學上最出名之學者,希望後繼學子能有繼承者啊!先生也是台灣外科醫學會理事長創始者,並於1967年開始擔任首任全國射箭協會理事長。精通中、日、英文,發表多篇散文、回憶錄及短歌,並於退休後專心繪畫,繪有數百件畫作。著有「象牙塔春秋記」、「杏林生涯雲和月」、日文寫的短歌集有「小螞蟻的足音」、「幻想之旅」及「餘生腳印」等。先生一生的傳奇將永遠成為吾後輩之起而效法之楷模,更是台灣外科發展史中最偉大的巨人。


Professor Tien-Yu Lin: Silent Giant

    Professor T-Y Lin, born in 1913, received his MD. from National Taiwan University in 1936. He became professor of surgery and acting chief in 1954, then chief of Department of Surgery, National Taiwan University Hospital in 1962. He devoted all his career for 40 years in the department until 1976 when he declared retirement from clinical surgery.

    Professor T-Y Lin was the pioneer of thoracic surgery and cardiac surgery in Taiwan. He performed the first successful cardiac surgery in 1956 and open heart surgery in 1964 (TY Lin, KM Chen and TK Liu. Total right lobectomy for primary hepatoma. Surgery 1960; 48:1048-60).

    He became a world famous surgeon for his "finger fracture" technique and research in hepatocellular carcinoma thereafter. Until he published his last scientific paper in 1987 (Lin TY, Lee CS, Chen KM et al. Role of surgery in the treatment of primary carcinoma of the liver : a 31-year experience. British Journal of Surgery. 1987;74:839-42), he had published hundreds scientific papers and written chapters about hepatic surgery and hepatocellular carcinoma for five English textbook. Professor Lin was also a founder of the Surgical Association of Republic of China. Retiring from surgery, Professor Lin devoted his time to poetry and paintings.

    The legacy of T-Y Ling continues to be a guide and inspiration for all the residences and fellows in surgery.
